Schweigen – Reden – Verstehen, 2013

Three etchings on copper plates, each measuring 38 × 49 cm

The three sheets unfold a dialogical interplay across generations. Joseph Beuys once said, “Marcel Duchamp's silence is overrated”—a critique of the mythical aura of retreat and a commitment to language, to “social sculpture.”

His student Jörg Immendorff turned the punchline around: “Joseph Beuys' talking is overrated.” In doing so, he ironically but decisively distanced himself from the exaggeration of his master and marked the step towards artistic independence.

The third sheet continues this chain: “Understanding Markus is too much to ask.” The sequence of silence – speech – understanding culminates here in a self-reflexive refraction. The excessive demands placed on reception become part of the work – a commentary on the art world as well as on the impossibility of fully capturing artistic practice in language or theory.

The result is a polyphonic dialogue about authority, criticism, and self-assertion that negotiates the relationship between tradition, the student generation, and the contemporary position in an exaggerated form. Dr. Pelle Solus
