Patient XY

Patient XY, 1976/77
Oil on nettle, 103 × 83 cm

The image depicts a surreal scene in which organic and technical elements intertwine. The central figure bears the features of a medical-technical apparatus: protective shield, mask, and surgical instruments merge with the body. Opposite it are deformed figures that are somewhere between flesh, puppet, and prosthesis. The composition resembles an absurd laboratory in which the boundaries between patient and machine, between healing and manipulation, blur.
