MACHINE DREAM (1983) (1983)
The translucent polyethylene figure, suspended above a compressor, is simultaneously body, shell, and projection. A skull alludes to humanity, yet the breath that gives the form originates solely from the machine.
The work poses the question: If machines could dream, what would they dream of? The answer: of themselves.
The compressor produces no alien image, but merely the repetition of its own form: pressure, expansion, circulation. Humanity appears only as a trace, a remnant.
Thus, MACHINE DREAM becomes a metaphor for the autonomy of technology: it imagines not humanity, but only its own existence. The machine's dream is a closed loop—uncanny, empty, and yet powerfully fascinating.
