The Speechlessness of Stones, 1999
Core samples from a depth of 400 meters, presented in glass tubes like samples from an imaginary experiment, form the centerpiece of the installation. The ancient sediments of the Paleozoic Era, relics of a geological epoch 360 million years ago, merge with layers added by the artist—personal found objects, relics of industrial society, fragments of memory.
This creates a psycho-geological model that translates the speechlessness of stones into a poetic material semantics: geological depths and human consciousness, natural history and remnants of civilization, united in the context of a threatened environment.
