Thoughts on the exhibit “The Landlady” for the XENIA exhibition

“No landlady, no guests”: this simple sentence can be taken almost literally if one extends the figure of the landlady to her mythical dimension, which ultimately culminates in the goddess of life and death, as she is known from Oriental and classical antiquity, i.e., in a “life-giving” – and consequently also “life-taking” – female entity whose real model is not only the mother-child relationship, but also the man-woman relationship. The “guest” therefore relates to this ambivalent female entity, which brings both good and evil, not only as a “child,” but also as a “man.” He is connected to her not only through a primary nurturing relationship, but also through an erotic relationship (a doubling of the relationship between nourishment and love, which is expressed in myths, legends, fairy tales, comic stories, and romantic stories, for example, by the fact that the “landlady” serves aphrodisiacs).
