Frühe Arbeiten, 1968–1973
Early works, 1968–1973
Many of the early drawings were inspired by the artist's personal life: he created portraits of his first girlfriends. But these portraits are much more than mere likenesses. The physiognomies open up into ornamental structures, hair intertwines with feathers, vegetal patterns overlay skin and facial expressions. The face becomes a field of transformation—between intimacy and alienation, between reality and dream.
It is precisely this motif of the face that proves to be a common thread running through to the present day. What was born out of biographical proximity and artistic experimentation in the early works returns today in the KOLLEKTIVGEDÄCHTNIS concept: the face as a projection surface, as a repository of memory, as a place where the personal merges into the universal. Thus, the portraits of youth form the origin of a motif that continues to structure the work to this day and lends it a deep, timeless continuity.
