The series “Geil” works with the medium of Styro-Prints: simple, direct prints from Styrodur plates that unfold a raw and at the same time iconic visual vocabulary. Scenes of physical intimacy, fragments of gestures and poses appear in bold red on a yellow background, interspersed with handwritten comments.
Between pornography and pop, irony and seriousness, a multi-layered play with clichés of sexuality and desire emerges. The titles—“I’m still in school,” “Life begins at seventeen,” “You can’t forbid me that,” “Love is a strange game”—quote catchphrases and song lyrics that seem to emerge from the collective memory of postwar and pop culture.
The prints do not function as erotic images, but as a reflection on the images of eroticism as shaped by the media, music, and mass culture. The simplicity of the Styro-Print process—fast, rough, without technical perfection—reinforces the ironic refraction and at the same time refers to the transience of such motifs.
“Geil” is thus both provocation and analysis: an image atlas of desire that oscillates between nostalgia, pop culture references, and social criticism.
